I don't think there is such a thing as a sure line, from my experience in the school system, many parents today aren't any different than their children, except that their children have an excuse for acting childish. I would treat the parents exactly as you would a child -- withhold the services for which they aren't paying. And tell them, frankly, calmly and candidly, that their behavior is unacceptable, that they are responsible for the debts they incur, and that there is a penalty for such behavior. If your school administration won't back you up or help you out, rethink why you are tutoring these kids. If it is complete dedication, expect to get screwed -- that's the way life works. If it is for additional income, redo your payment arrangements. Remember this, if nothing else, a quote from an Austrian writer: Many think they have kind hearts who have weak nerves. Don't let bullies walk all over you in the name of ';etiquette.'; There isn't anything impolite about standing up for yourself. Good luck!How do you deal with difficult parents as a teacher?
Presumably you made the fee clear to them before they sent their little darlings for extra-curricular tutoring?
If so, you could politely remind them that they entered into a verbal contract with you and that you will be unwilling to provide more tutoring until the bill is settled.
In addition, I would recommend getting them to sign and date a legally binding contract in future. For example, perhaps they could contract to pay for a block of ten lessons, or they could contract to pay for each lesson singly. You could stipulate that payment must be provided before the start of each class - e.g. the parents could give the money to the child to bring you each time they attend class.
Unless you have an agreement with them to provide paid tutoring for their child then you cannot expect to be paid. The parents likely assume you are just going the extra step to help their child. If you want to tutor the child and also want to be paid then you must talk to the parents about this beforehand. If there is an agreement in place then simply hand them your bill after the tutoring session.
Well, that sort of depends on the pretext under which they owe you money... such as, did they specifically know they were going to owe you money?
I wish I had more details about ';always in your face';
If no, I can't really help you.
If yes, then:
';You agreed to pay for my extra time in teaching your son/daughter subject X. ';
';I worked the extra time, and, I'm as busy as anyone else. My time is valuable to me.';
';I love to teach, I like your kid, but extra time that I spend needs to be helping me and my family, or I'm not being fair to myself and them.';
';I'm sorry I have to ask for money for my extra time, but, if you worked overtime at your job, you'd want to be paid, too, right?';
Any and all of those.
Send them a detailed ';receipt'; of services rendered - aka tutoring after school, with dates and times - asking for payment. State that if the bill goes unpaid for 30 days, you will cancel any tutoring until it is paid. If you have their email, send this via email as well - CC yourself as well as the principal. And don't Bcc it - let them see that everyone knows what is going on.
Make sure that you give them something in writing BEFORE hand as to what the rates are for your services. Keep accurate records of all work you do and if they don't pay send official looking invoices to them in the mail detailing the work and the cost.
I think you should be very firm about your rate , and have a specific day when you get paid ( depends if it s every 2 weeks or once a month) if you dont receive any money by that specific day than you dont take the student. bottome line, this way you earn your respect.
well, just tell them its an investment. you know, pay a little hear and you can get into a better college and get a better degree and get a better profession and get a higher salary... its an investment
hmm i think you should go silent untill they pay up i get wat i want with this method
get them to pay in advance and it will never be an issue
umm just like rune awway i guess(j/k)
