How do you prove you have a parent's consent to marry in Japan?

I'm 19 years old and am planning on getting married in Japan (to a Japanese national), but apparently if you're under 20 you need a parent's consent. I've heard things like they need to sign the 婚姻届け, etc, but nothing official... anyone know EXACTLY what I need to get signed?

Ahhhhhh Rick. He's not of legal age in Japan. Legal age in Japan is 20. It's going to be a bit sticky if you are a foreigner because your parents don't have an 印鑑 nor an 印鑑証明書 which is what you might need to prove that they actually stamped (signed) the document. You'd better check at the local government office where you want to get married. The local laws are different from place to place and the paperwork you need to fill out is also different.





So to find out what you EXACTLY need to get signed depends on where you live. Save yourself a lot of headache and go to the 市役所 or 役場 or whatever your local government has and ask them EXACTLY what you need to do.

From what my brother has tol me you need only the family registry form and the Marriage license and both of you can get married. You must be eighteen and male and at least 16 and female to be married in Japan. You need to fill out the forms at the website listed and both of you can be married


.If you were underage you would need a signed agreement from your parents consent to marry. This can be from a living parent, either mother of father and if both are dead then your guardian can sign the form. You can all forms and marriage license on-line. The form is marriage Consent form and you must have that signed to apply for marriage license in most countries. Since both of you are of legal age and you are marrying a Japanese National it will be much easier for you to get married.. I have given you the website where you can download all forms needed.
