Taxes: How do I keep my parents form claiming me as a dependent in this years taxes?

I just graduated and am living and working on my own. I want to make sure I am independent from my parents so I can get a stimulus check this go round. What do I need to do to claim myself as independent?Taxes: How do I keep my parents form claiming me as a dependent in this years taxes?
The cost of providing your own upkeep is many times any stimulus check you will get, so I'm sure mom and dad are fine with that.

If you're not paying your own upkeep, they get to claim you.

BTW, there is little or no chance a further so-called stimuls check will be issued. The last one did absolutely nothing, and with the government already drownng in debt, giving another check back will be worse than useless, it would be almost criminaly incompetant.Taxes: How do I keep my parents form claiming me as a dependent in this years taxes?
What your parents do does not affect whether you can receive a stimulus check. Your eligibility is determined by whether it is legal for your parents to claim you, not by whether they do claim you.

If it is legal for your parents to claim you, then (1) you cannot stop them from doing so, except by murdering or kidnapping them, and (2) even if they do not claim you, you are prohibiting from claiming yourself and are ineligible for a stimulus check.

If it is illegal for your parents to claim you, then you should simply file your own 2008 tax return normally, sometime between January 1, 2009, and April 15, 2009, and claim yourself on that tax return. Even if your parents do claim you illegally, you will still be eligible for a stimulus check, if there are stimulus checks next year (this has not been decided yet). However, it may be delayed somewhat while the IRS verifies that you, and not your parents, were entitled to claim you.
Hopefully you have a good relationship with your parents which would make it easier to talk to them about your decision. If your parents provided 50% of support for you this year, it would only be fair to let them claim you for this year. ';Hotmama'; made a good suggestion of the possibility of letting them claim you and then sharing the goods. Good luck to you and remember, next year you will be free and clear to file your own taxes without the ';parentals'; being in the middle.
You can claim yourself, but the part that says can anyone claim you on their taxes you'll have to say yes. Taxes are done on last years return and though you graduated this year, they supported you last year. Be patient you'll be totally on your own next year (unless they provided 51% of your total support and you made under a certain amount of money. Until then they can claim you. Don't make waves and make it hard on them. Make a deal with them. Let them claim you so they will get more back and a larger stimulus and they can give you a share.
Just go to your dad and say, ';Look dad, I want to claim myself this year so I can get a stimulus check, so if you and mom claim me instead, then I'm going to have to come back when you're old and too weak to defend yourself and slap the cowboy sh!t out of you.'; However, if you lived with them last year and you were a full time student, then they do have the right to claim you on their taxes. Just wait until next year ok...
Go to irs.gov, get publication 501 and print out the support test worksheet on page 18. Fill it out. Determine whether you provided more than half of your own support or not.

If you did, give a copy to your parents and remind them that the rules for dependency have a support test and if you are claimed twice, this is what you are going to provide to the IRS.
earn at least $15k this year--otherwise, legally, they can claim you

the one sure way to get around this would be to file your taxes 1st; the IRS will get you the refund quicker and if your parents try to claim you, they'll refuse your parents deduction since that was filed 2nd
You tell them you are filing for yourself. Then do it. If they still claim you, they can get into some trouble. You just file your taxes when you get eh paperwork. (Usually in the end of January)

I suggest you take a tax-prep class. H%26amp;R Block offers them, so does Jackson Hewitt.
Since you do not live at your parents' house and you provide more than half your support, you are no longer a dependent. Just tell your parents you are filing your own taxes this year and do it. It is up to them to stop claiming you.
The early bird gets the worm--at least the first bite.

File in early Jan. and do let them know you are claiming yourself.
Just file your own taxes before your parents do.
File your own taxes.
if they are suppling more than 50% of your up keep they can claim you if not they can't
